ImpulseCheck in detail

Why ImpulseCheck?

Your systems are subjected to electromagnetic interferences every day. The number of interferences and their effects usually go unnoticed, however. Installed surge protective devices (SPDs) protect against surge currents and destructive transients. This improves system availability while helping to safeguard operation. Even SPDs with status indicators, however, do not provide information on how long protection will last. This is where ImpulseCheck comes in and identifies electromagnetic interferences. To this end, Phoenix Contact SPDs reliably detect and indicate previous damage. Exposure to electromagnetic interferences in your system also becomes transparent even without the SPDs installed.
Why ImpulseCheck?

Method of operation

ImpulseCheck is the assistance system for surge protection and enables the continuous monitoring of the system's EMC and the installed surge protective devices (SPDs). Electromagnetic interference and surge currents are detected on each active conductor, allocated a time stamp, and transferred to Proficloud.io. It is here that the events are analyzed. Key parameters are evaluated and indicated. For Phoenix Contact SPDs, the actual load is determined at all times based on the recorded events. The state of health (SoH) is output for each mode of protection.
Method of operation

Connection and communication

In just a few easy steps, you can affix up to four sensors to the connecting cables of the power supply or an SPD that is actively monitored. Thanks to external sensors, the system can be easily installed or retrofitted in both new and existing systems. If the SPD has a remote indication contact, this is also linked to ImpulseCheck. Power is supplied via a 24 V DC connection. The assistance system connects to the Internet via an Ethernet connection to communicate with Proficloud.io.
Connection and communication

Configuration via web-based management

ImpulseCheck is incorporated in the IT environment via an integrated web-based management system. For this purpose, a direct connection is established between the laptop and ImpulseCheck, and web-based management is accessed. Data such as the IP address or dynamic IP assignment via DHCP, proxy servers and other IT-relevant data are entered. After ImpulseCheck has been configured and incorporated in your IT environment, it is ready to start transmitting data to Proficloud.io.

Impulse Analytics Service from Proficloud.io

After registering and logging in to Proficloud.io, the hardware ImpulseCheck is configured in the Impulse Analytics Service. To this end, key protective device configuration parameters are entered. The installation date is also important when it comes to quantifying the state of health (SoH) for Phoenix Contact SPDs. Location information or internal contact persons make it easier to identify individual ImpulseCheck installations if several locations are monitored.

ImpulseCheck FAQs

In this section you will find a collection of frequently asked questions (FAQ), that have reached us since the launch of ImpulseCheck. If you prefer to download the full list of FAQs, please click here.

1. How secure is ImpulseCheck (IT security)?

The measurement data is transmitted via an encrypted Internet connection in accordance with the TLS 1.2 standard. You can temporarily start a local web server for network settings on the device, such as static or dynamic IP (DHCP) or proxy configurations. In normal operation, the device does not disclose any open ports, which means maximum security. Any software updates necessary in the future will be made available automatically.

2. What does Phoenix Contact do with the data?

The measurement data is stored permanently in the Proficloud.io in order to calculate long-term effects on the protective device and to identify systematic malfunctions in the system. Only anonymized data which, in accordance with GDPR, does not enable the identification of persons, is used for the continuous improvement of the aging algorithms and for general statistical purposes.

3. Can ImpulseCheck be installed without an SPD?

Yes. For the analysis of the system EMC, the sensors can, for example, be mounted on the feed-in lines of a system in order to detect transient overvoltages and surge currents there. With the appropriate expertise, this measurement data can be used to draw far-reaching conclusions regarding the system EMC.

4. Can ImpulseCheck also detect flickers and harmonics?

No. The transient overvoltages are detected through capacitive measurement via the sensors mounted on the cables. The process is optimized for transient overvoltages. Flickers and harmonics are not within the detection frequency range. Other devices, such as the EMpro energy measuring devices, are suitable for measuring flickers and harmonics.

5. Why does ImpulseCheck only function in connection with the Proficloud.io?

A key role of ImpulseCheck is determining the load on an SPD (surge protective device). This makes it possible to draw conclusions on its state of health (SoH).

The algorithms established for estimating the aging behavior can be continuously improved through empirical data. By permanently storing the measurement data in the Proficloud.io, all users can benefit from this continuous improvement of the algorithms, even if ImpulseCheck has been installed for a number of years. As soon as an improved algorithm is available, this is integrated into the Impulse Analytics Service. It is automatically applied to all previously available data. This makes the system absolutely future-proof, which would not be possible with a local platform not connected to the cloud.

6. How can the data be exported and integrated into an existing control system?

The REST interface of the ImpulseAnalytics application enables all data to be called up and further processed at any time. Furthermore, there is a simple function available for exporting the entire measurement data for selected individual events for your own evaluations.

7. Can ImpulseCheck only be used with SPDs from Phoenix Contact?

No. ImpulseCheck can be used with any SPD from any manufacturer. The measurement and representation of the load caused by transient overvoltages and surge currents does not depend on the type of SPD. However, statements on the state of health (SoH) and recommendations for the predictive replacement of the surge protection can only be made for surge protective devices from Phoenix Contact, because this requires detailed knowledge of the internal design and structure of the SPD.

8. Does Phoenix Contact provide support in the interpretation of events?

The Smart Service Impulse Analytics Service from Proficloud.io is continuously being further developed. Your contact partner in sales will be happy to answer any enquiries regarding the interpretation of any outstanding events. However, it is not possible to guarantee the prompt and comprehensive processing of all enquiries.

9. Can a correction factor for calculating the state of health (SoH) be applied for older SPDs?

No. It is not possible to determine the previous load of an older SPD. The highly nonlinear behavior of the components installed in SPDs means that a retroactive calculation based on current measurement data is not possible. Making a forecast of the aging based on the date of installation is also impossible, because aging is primarily caused by individual events – the frequency of which is unknown.

10. Does an ImpulseCheck device have to be installed on every SPD?

Each SPD to be monitored requires an ImpulseCheck device.

11. Is there a volume discount on the devices on the Proficloud.io platform?

A volume discount is not currently provided as a standard. Please contact your partner in sales regarding this.

12. Which port does my IT department have to activate?

For connection to the Proficloud, the device must be able to reach the configured DNS server or that assigned by the DHCP server. Furthermore, the device communicates with the domains www.proficloud.net and m2m.proficloud.net via port 443. It is also possible to use an HTTP proxy server with “basic” authentication.

13. Why is there a difference between the entries in the lists "Surge Current List" and "Transient Overvoltage List"?

The sensor of IPCH is designed for a measurement of the change of magnetic field which results from a change in current flow. Such measurements are shown as events in the surge current list. An additional function of the sensors in combination with the multi-layer PCB board in the IPCH module is a detection of transient overvoltages by capacitive coupling. This is a mere counting of events without quantitative information about the voltage spikes.

14. Why is there not one entry per detected transient overvoltage?

The transient overvoltages are counted in real time, but since thousands of transients can occur in a very short time, it is not possible to put a separate time stamp on each event. The total number of transients is transmitted approximately every minute.

15. In case of the cloud connection being interrupted, are events also stored in ImpulseCheck and transmitted at a later point in time?

The device also works if the connection is interrupted. Pulses continue to be measured and the device constantly attempts to re-establish the connection to Proficloud.io. In the absence of a cloud connection, a limited number of pulses can be stored in the buffer memory until the connection to Proficloud.io is restored. The number of stored pulses depends on the respective duration, as this largely determines the required amount of data. Please note that the ImpulseCheck cannot set a correct time stamp if the cloud connection is lost.
